چکیده

Objective: To determine the efficacy of fine needle aspiration and cytology (FNAC) in solitary thyroid nodules at tertiary care Hospital.
Materials Methods: This study was conducted department general surgery Liaquat University Hospital Jamshoro/ Hyderabad during one year from June 2015 May 2016. The included all subjects any gender age who had a nodule that confirmed clinically or through scan. achieve tissue diagnosis before surgery, participants experienced (FNAC). resected specimens were submitted for histopathology investigation postoperatively. Diagnostic accuracy FNAC assessed by cross tabulation taking as gold standard. data gathered using self-made proforma analyzed with SPSS version 20.
Results: Total fifty (STN) patients studied. Mean 34.54+10.3 years. Of 50 patients, 46(92%) & 4(8%) females males respectively male female ratio 1:11.5. 28(56%) STN on right lobe, left side 19(38%) cases; isthmus 3 (6%) cases. As per results, nodular colloid goiters seen 66% cases, follicular neoplasm 10%, papillary carcinoma Hurthle cell variation 6%, benign cystic lesion 4% neoplastic only 1 case, also subject suspected malignancy. Thyroid function tests normal patients. showed significant 83.3% sensitivity, 86.8% specificity, 86% diagnostic accuracy, 66.6% PPV 94.28% NPV when taken standard.
Conclusion: In conclusion this observed to be simple, safe effective tool detecting malignancies sensitivity specificity respectively.

Comparison of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology and Thyroid Scan in Solitary Thyroid Nodule

Objective. This was a comparative study between FNAC and thyroid scan used to diagnose the solitary thyroid nodule and histopathology was used as gold standard to compare the results of both modalities. We hypothesized that Fine needle aspiration cytology and thyroid scan diagnose solitary thyroid nodule (STN) as accurately as histopathology. Materials and Methods. This study comprised of 50 pa...

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology versus Fine Needle Capillary Sampling in Cytological Diagnosis of Thyroid Lesions

Background and Objectives: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an established out- patient procedure used in primary diagnosis of palpable thyroid lesions. A modified technique fine needle capillary sampling (FNCS) obviates the need of suction, is less painful, patient friendly and reported to overcome the problem of inadequate and bloody specimens. The aim of our study was to compare the...

Correlation of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology with Histopathology in the Diagnosis of Solitary Thyroid Nodule

Background. Fine needle aspiration cytology is considered the gold standard diagnostic test for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. Fine needle aspiration cytology is a cost effective procedure that provides specific diagnosis rapidly with minimal complications. Based on the cytology findings, patients can be followed in cases of benign diagnosis and subjected to surgery in cases of malignant dia...

Evaluation of Solitary Thyroid Nodule with Correlation of Preoperative Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology with Postoperative Histopathology

Introduction localized thyroid enlargement with rest of the thyroid apparently normal is clinically defined as solitary nodule of thyroid. STN is seen in 4-6% of the adult individuals. Fortunately the likelihood that a single thyroid nodule is malignant is approximately 5%. Nodules decreasing in size have negligible risk of cancer and no treatment is required. However, enlarging solid nodules h...
